Position Overview:
The Boy & The Bear is seeking a strategic and results-driven Coffee Director to lead our comprehensive coffee program.
This pivotal role oversees every phase from green coffee sourcing to retail execution, ensuring adherence to our high standards of quality and performance. The ideal candidate will manage specialized teams, enforce measurable KPIs, and drive sustainability, innovation, and efficiency across all coffee operations.
As the Coffee Director, you will ensure that our coffee remains the core strength of our company.

- Key Responsibilities:
- Source and purchase green coffee within an established budget, adhering to defined cost targets and supplier SLAs.
- Negotiate contracts to meet predetermined pricing and quality benchmarks; monitor supplier performance through regular evaluations.
- Roasting & Quality Control:
- Oversee roasting operations with clearly defined sensory and production KPIs, ensuring each batch meets quality and flavor profile standards.
- Lead the roasting team by implementing scheduled performance reviews and corrective measures when standards are not met.
- Coffee Education & Training:
- Develop and implement training programs for staff and baristas, utilizing measurable learning outcomes and regular audits (e.g., quarterly store evaluations) to assess proficiency.
- Ensure all educational content aligns with our brand standards and industry best practices, updating training materials based on customer feedback and secret shopper data.
- Production, Packaging & Shipping:
- Manage production and packaging workflows with specific targets (e.g., a 98% on-time delivery rate); monitor inventory levels to minimize shortages or overstock.
- Coordinate with production staff using established scheduling and efficiency metrics to maintain optimal output.
- E-Commerce & Wholesale:
- Oversee online operations, ensuring the Shopify backend reflects accurate product information and meets target order fulfillment rates.
- Lead the wholesale team in developing external partnerships with industry-recognized brands by setting clear revenue and collaboration metrics.
- b>Merchandising & Product Development:
- Manage retail merchandise inventory using data-driven performance metrics; collaborate on new product initiatives that align with both brand vision and financial targets.
- Regularly analyze product performance to refine offerings, establishing criteria for introducing or discontinuing products.
- General Leadership & Cross-Department Collaboration:
- Provide proactive leadership across all coffee-related departments by setting clear KPIs and performance review periods.
- Stay current with industry trends and sustainability practices by regularly reviewing market reports and aligning our operations with recognized industry benchmarks.
- Who You Are & Necessary Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in green coffee buying within the specialty coffee industry.
- At least 3 years of roasting experience, including hands-on work with roasting machines, quality control, and team management in commercial roasting.
- 3 years of assortment planning experience in the specialty coffee sector.
- 3 years of supervisory experience leading teams of more than three individuals.
- 5 years of combined experience in specialty coffee leadership, green buying, roasting, warehousing, and e-commerce management.
- Current CA driver’s license.
- Current Food Safety Certification.
- An established network within the specialty coffee industry.
- Preferred:

Lead Barista - Green Store
