At The Edge Of The Andes

In the southeastern corner of Peru, where the Andes meet the Amazon basin, the community of Juaihuay cultivates coffee within the Manu Biosphere Reserve, one of the most ecologically diverse landscapes on earth. For generations, Quechua families have farmed these mountains, producing coffee alongside native forests that continue to define both the land and its agricultural traditions.

A Young Cooperative

Although coffee has been cultivated here for more than fifty years, the Juaihuay Community formally organized as a cooperative in 2021. Today, 130 small producers work collectively, sharing infrastructure, technical knowledge, and resources that have steadily improved both quality and long-term economic stability. Most farms remain under five hectares, allowing each producer to maintain a close relationship with every harvest.

Farming With The Forest

Coffee is grown beneath native shade trees as part of an agroforestry system that protects biodiversity while naturally enriching the soil. Following harvest, ripe cherries undergo a traditional washed process, fermenting aerobically for 48 to 72 hours before being slowly dried on shaded raised beds. The result is a coffee that expresses both clarity and balance while preserving the character of its origin.

Continuing Forward

Alongside improvements in production, the cooperative continues to invest in water conservation, organic farming practices, and full lot traceability. Women have become an increasingly important part of the cooperative's leadership, helping shape a future where quality, environmental stewardship, and community development continue to advance together.

Milk chocolate forms the foundation of the cup, complemented by the gentle brightness of orange and a lingering honey-like sweetness that reflects the elegance often found in Peru's highest elevations.
