At The Edge Of The Andes
In the southeastern corner of Peru, where the Andes meet the Amazon basin, the community of Juaihuay cultivates coffee within the Manu Biosphere Reserve, one of the most ecologically diverse landscapes on earth. For generations, Quechua families have farmed these mountains, producing coffee alongside native forests that continue to define both the land and its agricultural traditions.
A Young Cooperative
Although coffee has been cultivated here for more than fifty years, the Juaihuay Community formally organized as a cooperative in 2021. Today, 130 small producers work collectively, sharing infrastructure, technical knowledge, and resources that have steadily improved both quality and long-term economic stability. Most farms remain under five hectares, allowing each producer to maintain a close relationship with every harvest.
